– FEATURED COLLECTION –and Lilith– by Albert Sofian –

Starting from pre-Christian myths and legends, in the “and Lilith” collection, Albert Sofian recreates a controversial character of today. Regardless of the version of origin, created from clay and at the same time with Adam or an angel transformed into a human to be the partner of Adam, Lilith, the first woman in the Universe, becomes in Albert Sofian’s series the generator of emotions that underlies the character changes of biblical personalities. The disobedient, the free, the one who fully assumes the free will offered by the Divinity, is also the one who pushes the subjects to disobedience and the cowards, the helpless, she shows them to the world as they really are. Yet, in the story imagined by Albert Sofian, Lilith reveals to the world her share of suffering. Suffering that we perceive under the veil of mourning with which the author chose to protect the face of a cursed demon or the weeping face of a mother who has lost her children. During the “and Lilith” series we will discover the first woman of the world as sensual, beautiful and mysterious, gentle and harsh, merciful and vengeful, honest and manipulative, with all the emotions that the Divinity experiences through her.

“Adam & Lilith” is a work full of symbols that places us in the story somewhere between Lilith’s separation from Adam and the appearance of Eve. The veil of mourning not only hides Lilith’s deceptive face, but also the suffering of the curse she wears after meeting the three angels sent by God to return her to the garden of Heaven. The child that Lilith protects and rebukes at the same time is the metaphorical representation of the childish behavior that Adam adopted at the time of their separation. However here, in Albert Sofian’s vision, the talisman in Adam’s hand represents the promise that Lilith made to the three angels and that she decided to keep by giving the man a chance at existence.

“Eva & Lilith” – Albert Sofian

  • Medium:  oil and oil pastel on canvas
  • Dimensions: 90 cm x 150 cm
  • Year: 2021

Eve is the second woman God creates, this time from Adam’s rib, as a definition of total obedience. Lilith finds out about Eve’s existence and wants to meet her. She wants to understand what does the perfection lusted by Adam consists of. She discovers in Eve a being very similar to her but naive, easy to manipulate. In opposition to Adam or out of compassion for Eve, Lilith decides that Eve must learn, must know. And she skillfully enters under her skin and helps her bite the apple of knowledge. At the last second, the Divinity illuminates Eve’s face, but her gaze has already been apple-shaded.
